The Plague (Adiris) – Lore Overview

Adiris was once a devoted priestess in ancient Babylon, chosen at a young age to serve the gods and lead rituals of purification. As disease spread across the city, she took it upon herself to care for the sick, believing that unwavering faith and ritual could stave off the plague. Though her body became ravaged by illness, she continued to perform sacred rites, her coughs hidden beneath hymns and her sores beneath ceremonial robes.

When the temples fell and the dead outnumbered the living, Adiris remained, conducting her rituals in isolation as the bodies piled around her. In the end, abandoned and mortally ill, she clutched her censer and prayed not for her own life, but for deliverance. Something answered—not a god, but The Entity. It offered her a place beyond death, where she could eternally spread her corrupt devotion.

Now, as The Plague, Adiris roams the realms of The Entity, her devotion twisted into infection. She vomits bile upon Survivors and corrupts totems, spreading sickness in the name of a divine force long since distorted.

The cries of the unfaithful make your heart leap.

Whenever a Survivor is put into the Dying State by any means, all other Survivors within your Terror Radius will scream and reveal their current location to you for 4/5/6 seconds.

“Horror overcomes the heart of infidels who cry at the feet of the fallen.” — (Hymn of Praise, 11.4)

Infectious Fright

Corrupt Intervention

Your prayers invoke a dark power that meddles with the Survivors’ chances of survival.

  • At the start of the Trial, the 3 Generators located farthest from you are blocked by The Entity for 80/100/120 seconds.

Corrupt Intervention deactivates prematurely once the first Survivor is put into the Dying State.

“It shall be known across the land that the Gods curse the unfaithful.” — (The Tablet of Adiris, 3.7)

The display of your Powers creates a whirlwind of panic that spreads throughout the land. Whenever the Obsession loses a Health State by any means and thus enters the Injured State, Dark Devotion activates:

  • Your Terror Radius transfers to the Obsession for 20/25/30 seconds, and its radius is set to 32 metres.
  • Grants the Undetectable Status Effect for the same duration.

The Obsession with your transferred Terror Radius is also considered to be ‘inside the Terror Radius’ for other purposes.

Dark Devotion

You can only be obsessed with one Survivor at a time.

“And terror shall take hold of a defiant non-believer, who shall falsely announce my arrival.” — (The Tablet of Adiris, 48.9)

  • Each injured, dying, or hooked Survivor afflicts Survivors with a stack-able 1/1.5/2 % Action Speed penalty to Repairing, Sabotaging, and Cleansing, up to a maximum of 4/6/8 %.

You reveal the true power of the Totems, hidden within their remains.

  • You see the Auras of cleansed Totems

You can perform a ritual on a cleansed Totem to resurrect it as a Rekindled Totem. For each Rekindled Totem active at the same time, Hex: Pentimento gains an additional effect:

  • 1 Totem: reduces all Survivors’ Repair speed by 20/25/30 %.
  • 2 Totems: reduces all Survivors’ Healing speed by 20/25/30 %.
  • 3 Totems: reduces all Survivors’ Recovery speed from being downed by 20/25/30 %.
  • 4 Totems: reduces all Survivors’ Gate-Opening speed by 20/25/30 %.
  • 5 Totems: all Totems are permanently blocked by The Entity.

When a Rekindled Totem is cleansed, its remains are consumed by The Entity and it cannot be rekindled.

“Though a pentimento is an inherently concealed piece of art, there is something to be said of the desire to discover that which is beyond.” — A Guide to Art & Process (1961)

Dark Lord Perk

You see your victim from afar and resolve to prolong their suffering.

After a Generator is completed, Hex: Wretched Fate activates and lights a random Dull Totem, cursing the Obsession:

  • The Aura of the Hex Totem is revealed to them within 12 metres.

Overwhelming pain reverberates outwards.

At the start of the Trial, 4 random Hooks are changed into Scourge Hooks:

  • The Auras of Scourge Hooks are revealed to you in white.

You start the Trial with 4 Tokens on Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance. Each time a Survivor is hooked on a Scourge Hook for the first time, 1 Token is consumed and the following effects apply:

  • The Generator with the most Progression explodes and instantly regresses by 10/15/20 % of its total Progression.
  • Normal Generator Regression applies afterwards.
  • All Survivors repairing that Generator will scream, but not reveal their location.

Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance is disabled for the remainder of the Trial once all Tokens are consumed.
